Organic sun creams: the best to try summer 2021

The main feature of organic sunscreens is that they contain only physical sunscreens, that is, they reject UV rays as if they were a shield. Today they are more and more pleasant and formulated with innovative techniques that preserve health. Both of man and nature

Organic sunscreens usually contain natural ingredients as well physical sunscreens (also known as minerals). The big difference with the “classic” sun creams is in this last point. There is a clear distinction, in fact, between physical sunscreens and chemical sunscreens. The former act as a screen reflecting the UV radiation, chemical filters, on the other hand, selectively absorb them and transform them into heat. Often both filters are used in combination to achieve adequate sun protection. Then there are creams that have only physical filters inside them, such as organic sun creams.

It should be noted, however, that there is no sunscreen that protects you from the sun 100%. In this regard, the European Union does not admit that on the packaging there are words such as “total screen” or “total protection” (only one item of clothing is).

Why choose organic sun creams

Using organic sunscreen is one individual choice, as every filter on the market is valid. To be marketed, it must comply with precise legal requirements and pass a series of tests that guarantee protection from UVA and UVB (all factors that are used to determine the SPF declared on the package). The difference between chemical filters and physical filters, contained in organic sun creams, consists in mechanism of action and in the characteristics of the formulations, that is, rich in plant complexes.

What are physical sunscreens

Physical sunscreens, also known as mineral filters, are pigments that reflect and / or scatter both UV and visible light. Reflecting the rays, they do not penetrate the skin, but thus act as a “bounce” effect shield. The most common are the titanium dioxide, silicon dioxide, kaolin, iron or magnesium oxide and zinc oxide.
In the past, physical filters had the problem of creating a white patina when applied to the skin, which made them unwelcome. New technologies have made it possible to cancel this effect, since they reduce the size of the molecules (a process that goes by the name of “micronization”). And so creams with physical filters are more pleasant.

In the most advanced products, the mineral particles of physical sunscreens come microencapsulated in fatty acids, that is, they are wrapped in a patina of oil. This is the technology that makes the non-NANO physical filters, that is, not reduced to nanoparticles. This causes the filters to be more safe for health, and are more photostable (it means that they do not alter in the light). In addition, the organic sunscreens thus formulated are easily spread and are better distributed on the skin.

Characteristics of organic sun creams

In addition to physical (or mineral) filters, organic sunscreens contain ingredients from organic farming and natural complexes of botanical extracts with antioxidant properties, which therefore strengthen the skin’s defenses. Among the most beneficial plant substances we point out lycopene, aloe vera, coconut oil, rice oil, green tea and red vine.

Containing mineral sunscreens, organic sunscreens are unlikely to cause allergies. Furthermore, let’s not forget that they are biodegradable, thus respecting the marine fauna. All of which make them the right choice for baby and children’s skin, and also for the environment.
