The most recent problematic phenomenon for the skin is called Maskne. This neologism combines the terms “mask” is “acne», And precisely indicates acne that arises due to prolonged use of the mask.
There is nothing we can do about it: we must use this device if we care about our health and that of others, because the mask constitutes a first important barrier against the spread of coronavirus. Therefore, that of pimples is a negligible problem compared to the health emergency, however, it does not mean that we can still think of solutions.
The Maskne is a fairly widespread reality in these weeks, but it should not scare us, because there are some products on the market that can soothe pains and blooms of our pimples, which are mainly found on the nose, chin or cheeks. For some, acne shows up mixed with eczema, then with an itchy dermatitis.
As reported by the Evening Standard, the cause of the phenomenon is in various factors: stress, irregular diets, laziness in the skin care routine, vitamin D deficiency and “pollution” inside the mask (for example induced by sweat). It goes without saying that those who already had acne problems risk aggravating them with the use of the mask.
With the Covid-19 pandemic – said dermatologist Faheem Latheef – stress levels have certainly resulted in flare-ups of pre-existing acne and other related skin conditions, but in addition to this there is a new type of acne, dubbed Maskne – these are small pimples that appear in the pores clogged with face masks worn during the pandemic. We refer to this as mechanical acne, because the masks cause friction on the skin surface and break the skin barrier resulting in clogging of the pores which can lead to blemishes, but also contact dermatitis (dry skin).
The first tip to counteract the Maskne is to make DIY masks, so as to carefully select the material of which they are made. The mask should only be worn when indicated by official government guidelines, setting it aside in one clean envelope, when you take it off, waiting to wash it. For cleaning the device it is good to opt for a warm wash in the washing machine with other cotton clothes, or a hand wash with soap.
But how does the Maskne contrast daily on our face?
First of all, the skin must be kept clean and hydrated, in the morning and in the evening, with the most suitable products, so as not to alter its natural barrier, in order to remove unwanted bacteria, dirt and dust particles that can cause irritation and hypersensitivity.
It is good to wash your face often, before and after wearing the mask, perhaps with a deep cleanser. Better to choose a delicate and prebiotic cleanser to rebalance the microflora of the skin, and avoid creams that are too oily and choose products that do not contain ingredients that contrast blackheads, because they could be too aggressive. It’s best to avoid wearing makeup as much as possible, but you can use one soothing moisturizer that it is delicate and fragrance-free.
Any friction and irritation – dermatologist Tiffany J. Libby told InStyle – can push bacteria into the skin, create micro-drops of sweat – which allow easier entry for bacteria and dirt – and can lead to inflammation that leads to the process of acne.
The other tips are not really about the skin, but about reducing stress, which can be the cause of Maskne. So it is good to drink a lot of water, practice yoga or meditation, lead a diet rich in moisturizing or soothing foods, such as chickpeas, raspberries and blueberries. Also good is the intake of supplements containing zinc or vitamin D. Without forgetting a series of products that help us in cleansing and moisturizing the face.
