Hypericum oil: properties, uses and contraindications

Also called St. John’s oil, L’hypericum oil it is a panacea especially in case of burns and wounds, because it has an excellent healing power.

It is obtained from yellow and pleasantly scented flowers that are obtained from a plant called Hypericum perforatum. It is found mainly in dry soils and is a plant with a woody stem, with apparently pitted leaves. Those little holes are actually flowers, containing the precious hypericin, the active ingredient in hypericum.

These five-petaled flowers according to the original ritual should be harvested on June 24 (day of the summer solstice when the sun is at Zenith on the Equator, dedicated to St. John the Baptist). They should then be left to soak in the sun immersed in vegetable oil, to release all their healing power. June 24 has a very symbolic value. First of all, it is the one in which the plant reaches the peak of its balsamic power, that is, the maximum point of its concentration of active ingredients.

But it is also, symbolically, a direct reference to the sun, to emphasize that it is a completely natural remedy, which it concentrates in itself all the power and solar energy. Not surprisingly, unlike other oleoites, this is the only one whose maceration takes place in direct sunlight and not in the dark and lasts an entire lunar cycle.

Hypericum oil: what it is and how it is obtained

The fresh flowers are picked by hand and placed in an airtight glass container, covered with abundant olive or sunflower oil. The container must be exposed to the sun for about a month.

As the days go by, the color becomes di an intense ruby red: it means that the extraction of the active ingredients is taking place. For this, it is necessary to periodically turn the container upside down, in order to optimize the process.

After 30 days the oil is filtered and poured into a dark glass bottle, also hermetically sealed.

Hypericum oil: properties and uses

St. John’s wort oil gives its best on the sores, where it is applied directly to eliminate pain and promote the healing process, avoiding the typical wrinkling.

A couple of applications are enough for a sunburn, so as to relieve and soothe the skin. Hypericum oil, in fact, has been known since ancient times for its emollient properties and because it is capable of promoting cell regeneration.

For the same reasons it is also successfully used in the case of skin blemishes, psoriasis, stretch marks, acne scars.

It is excellent on all types of burn, from the mildest to the most severe. In case of second degree burns, St. John’s Wort oil prevents the growth of blisters and protects the tissues from possible bacterial action. In case of third degree burns it prevents the appearance of infections and acts as a vasoprotector.

Hypericum oil: contraindications

There are no particular contraindications to the external use of hypericum oil, but obviously a possible one hypersensitivity the active ingredients contained (primarily hypericin) could generate reactions.

Attention also in case of combination of the product with some specific drugs. The interaction with hormonal contraceptives for example (patch, pill, vaginal ring) could frustrate the action of the latter. The use is also not recommended in case of pregnancy, lactation, antidepressant therapy, anticoagulant, anticarcinogenic.

An important recommendation to follow, however, concerns the product conservation. Being very photosensitizing it tends to amplify the effects of the sun’s rays on the skin: this could be a problem especially for very sensitive skins, light ones, those characterized by freckles. Hypericum must therefore be preserved away from sunlight and artificial sources of heat and light.
